Heathcote – Chalmers Vineyard

This wine is fun…spicy nose of anise and dark berries.

The palate has dark plums and cherries with a juicy centre. A back palate of crushed cherries linger.

Grown by the Chalmers Family at their Colbinabbin vineyard which is North on the famous Camel Range of the Heathcote GI. The vineyard sits on a westerly slope, in the Cambrian soil.  Here the approach to grape growing centres around organic practices.

Picked in early February the fruit was transported in picking bins to Yarra Valley and destemmed into and 3kl open fermenter where the must was chilled. No additions were made, and the must was left to ferment naturally. Minimally handled with only 2 pump overs, pressed off and straight into barrel to finish. After 14 months of storage in barrel the wine was bottled with a small addition of sulphur dioxide without fining or filtration.

“Sagrantino from Chalmers Vineyard. Tomato leaf and blood plums. Feels a bit rustic but also cuddly in flavours. A bit of pomegranate tang with a sweet cherry, touch of smoke and dried leaves. Bright red crunchy fruit perfume and good hit of flavourful energy. Tasty and very drinkable very easily”.
