Description
Yarra Valley
Mendoza
It was part of a parcel of wine that derived from Coombe Farm, in the Yarra. Hand harvested and whole bunch pressed Mendoza clone, this had primary fermentation in barrel followed by MLF.
Somehow this barrel was ullaged quite badly when I found it in the warehouse after 8 months and it still smelled good to me albeit in a different guise. I used a bit of oxy wine from another barrel to fill it up. That was the last time it was topped, so it was a mistake of sorts but I enjoyed the wine. After 2 and a half years in barrel we gave it a small hit of SO2 – 40ppm and bottled it by hand.
The wine never had a protective flor yeast cover of any sort – just somehow it looked okay to me.
It lies very much in the Jura category of nutty and wild characters overlaying plenty of generous fruit.
